ANIMAL REIKI
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.
Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “Ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

During a Reiki session, animals often experience a deep state of peace as the Reiki clears imbalances, allowing for new and harmonious patterns of health and wellness to emerge.

When life energy is high, your pets are healthy and balanced, more relaxed and less likely to get sick. When it is low, they’ll often be more easily affected by stress and less resistant to illness. The practitioner channels healing energy through his hands to the animal through a light touch. Reiki is a safe complement to conventional medicine and all other forms of healing.

Jimmy has been surrounded by animals his entire life and always knew that his calling was to help as many as possible. In 2006, his world was flipped upside down, but right side up for the animals of the City of Bridgeport when he was appointed Chief Animal Control Officer for the State of Connecticut's largest municipal animal shelter. Playing with puppies and kitties was not at all what the job turned out to be. He witnessed a lot of cruelty and irresponsibility from pet owners but as time went on, he figured out that most of the problem was not blatant cruelty but IGNORANCE (Definition of Ignorance: lack of knowledge, educating or awareness) ​

He saw the shelter as a revolving door where pets were picked up or dumped and because of the extremely large number of animals coming in through the front door, the task of getting all of them adopted was very difficult. Especially, when you are a part of an antiquated municipality that does not understand that the only way to deal with the problem of an overabundance of animals entering the system is with a proactive approach not a reactive approach. He also took it upon himself to become State Certified as a Wildlife Rehabber and a Nuisance Wildlife Control Officer. He even went on to become a Consultant for the ASPCA of New York and was honored to also become a Humane Educator for the Bridgeport Police Academy.

This was still not a loud enough voice so in 2008, he and Melissa Kuian created A Hand for A Paw. Together they believed that through education and proactive programs the numbers of animals being dumped in the streets could diminish. They created their own curriculum, took it to the schools and were able to educate almost 5,000 children. School by school, classroom by classroom and child by child they believed the issue was a simple lack of education that was not being addressed. Caring for pets and dealing with animals in general (domestic and wild) was not a priority. A movement soon began and with the help of an amazing group of volunteers and an outfitted Recreational Vehicle they went into the community offering low cost vaccinations and pet food pantries. Teaching pet owners the importance of vaccinating, training, licensing and a well-balanced diet became the driving force behind A Hand for a Paw's mission, "Keeping Animals Home". The organization became known by many that never understood the responsibility of owning a pet.

Due to lack of funding, the organization closed in 2017. Jimmy continued to have a void in his heart to want to continue to help animals not suffer. So, during the beginning of 2019, he decided to look into Animal Reiki as a way to continue to give love, compassion and kindness to pets and now the void is once again being filled with the energy of the dogs he is doing Reiki on.
